What have I been up to lately

Niet veel. ;)

Mijn zesde week zit er al op. Tijd vliegt hier!

Nothing much ;)

My sixth week has already passed. Time flies here! I can not believe I'm already over half of my stay in Costa Rica.

The weekend of 22 and 23 february I went to Cahuita, Limon. A national parc at the caribbean coast. I had a really nice trip. We relaxed a bit at the beach, made a walk through the jungle, but especially the night was memorable.First we had a nice dinner and after that we showed our best dance moves (?) in a nice bar with sexy music and delicous cocktails. Once the alcohol started working, I felt the sudden urge to eat a burger. So while I was sitting outside, tipsy with a hamburger in my hand, a sloth passed in the electric cables. It was perfect.

Unfortunately sundayevening, on my way back in the bus, I started feeling really bad. Apparently I had eaten some contested food. I've been sick all following week, so the next weekend I stayed home. Still both that saturday and sunday were pretty nice. Saturday I joined two other volunteers to the beerfactory of their hostdad. This factory however seemed to be more like a vacation resort than a work place. They had a footbal field, two pools, free barbeque and beers (duh!). Although I didn't play football, I did enjoy the pool and beers. In the evening we went to Hooters. Beer and football need boobs as well.

Sunday was a lovely relaxed day at the zoo of Alajuela. They don't have big spectacular animals there, but they do have really cool birds and other small animals, of which some just walk around freely. The zoo is a botanic garden as well. I though this place was so beautiful and peaceful. I loved it.

In between that there was a week of work, in which we filmed an item about OVSICORI. This is the  institution of the national university that investigates volcanoes, earthquakes and stuff like that. Since Costa Rica with a lot of volcanoes and tectonic activity is the perfect place for this kind of investigation, scientists from all over the world come here to work with OVSICORI. I thought this subject was pretty cool, so I really liked last week.

The following weekend I was at the mall and at the beach of Jaco. A place close to San Joaquin, so I returned home the same day I went. Sunday was as lazy sunday should be. I did absooooluuuuuuutly nothing. <3

Monteverde

Ik lachte het echter weg like a boss)

Vorig weekend was vrij rustig.

In 1 woord: prachtig.

These pictures are absolutely stolen from internet. I couldn't make a photo of it myself, but so this is the tarzan swing.
Hoeraaaaa, let's go. uhuum.

 5                      4                      3                       2                          1

Duik. Schreeuwen. Vlinders in mijn buik. *1000 .        *10000000 .

You need four times this amount, for one cup of coffee. All hand-picked.
Ik begin mijn werkweek extreem vol energie. ;)

The past weekend, I headed together with five other volunteers to Monteverde. Again a busride of 4.5 hours, but boy was it worth it! Since I bought my busticket right before we took off, I didn't had a seat. Ever since I am in Costa Rica however, bad luck doesn't exist anymore. So someone didn't show up, and I was the first one to claim the free seat. (=Secretly sitting down and not looking anybody in the eyes anymore) (+bad luck does still exist. In an inattentive moment I fell of the curb into a pile of white dust and scrammed my hand palms, like when I was a kid and falling was still cool.)

Last weekend was pretty calm. I went to the mall with my host family, which was nice. We walked around a bit, grabbed a bite. I also spent one day at the pool and in the evening I went to the movies with Tileyah. A film that was English spoken, Spanish subtitled. Perfect for studying the Spanish. We saw 'The buttler'. Powerful movie, I can definately recommand it. ;)

This weekend however, was quite the opposite, nothing calm about it. I lived two days out of the life of an adrenaline junk. We arrived in Monteverde friday evening, searched an hostel and slept quite early. At 7.30 am the next day namely, there was a Canopytour on the planning. Who doesn't know what this is, look up ziplining on the internet. We did it in the beautiful cloudforest of Monteverde. At a certain point we flew in superman position over the open forest, one word: stunning. We ended the tour with a tarzan swing, a nice warm-up for the bungeejump. First time I would scream that weekend.

We turned back with a good portion of adrenaline running through our bodies, and the real challenge was still about to come. I ate my best lunch so far and hopped onto the bus that brought us to the crimescene. First thing that needed to be done was signing a document saying that if you had an injury, even when fatal, the organization wouldn't be responsable. Wooehoeee let's do this.

By three we could get on the platform to jump and I was with the first group, so no time to be scared. Before I realised I was looking down in the forest and people were counting     5   4   3   2   1

Dive. Scream. Butterflies. *1000. *100000. Realising I just did a bungeejump, still bouncing upside down. Looking around and only seeing trees. Trying to catch the rope to click onto my safety harnas, so they can pull me back up. Damn this is more difficult than I thought. Nope still didn't catch the rope, kinda like to be in a normal position again now. Got it. Breathing again when safe back on platform. Adrenaline raging through my body, most awesome experience EVER.

We ended the day with a drinking game in the hostel. Perfect.

Sunday was more relaxed. We booked a coffeetour. Accept for the environment that was beautiful, the explanation was also just really interesting. I say thankyou to every cup of coffee I get now, knowing about the hard work that needs to be done to make it. :)

I start my working week fully energized!

zaterdag 8 februari 2014

Weekend 1-2 februari

----

My first weekend in Costa Rica, immediately turned into one to remember. Together with some other volunteers of Projects Abroad, I went to the beach of Santa Teresa, a true surfers' paradise.

Saturday, in the early morning (5.00 a.m), we started our five hour lasting trip. Pretty long, but the destination made it totally worth it. A quick impression? Santa Teresa = A long street filled with nice beach bars, little supermarkets and surf stores. Vehicles par excellence here are the quad and vans, perfect for transporting surf boards. A spacious beach, poorly crowded, surrounded by a little wood. A somewhat rough sea, perfect for creating one of the sounds I love the most, the sound of waves. Very different from an artificial beach, such as the one in Barcelona.

Our accomodation were two rooms on top of a bar, where in the evening we picked in at a live reggaeton concert. Earlier that same evening, we witnessed the sunset at the beach, from our comfy chairs, with a cocktail in our hand.

I saw a lot of cool animals! On our way  from our rooms to the beach, we saw a whole family of monkeys in the top of the trees. A couple of steps further, an iguana crossed our path. The air at the beach is filled with special birds. Fishing is a popular activity here. Men who stand in the water and only with a cord pull gigantic fish out the sea. Unfortunately I saw that they just throw them on the beach, without killing them, so they are struggling for ages in the burning sun. People are posing with this big animals, grabbing them in their air holes to get a grip, the fish still alive. All in the end it got killed with a knife. I didn't really get it why they didn't kill it right away, it seemed a bit sad.

I, the next day, had turned into an animal myself. A lobster! The sun didn't have any mercy on my skin and the rest of the week I had to suffer. I even had blisters on my nose and cheeks, eventhough I did use suncream. Now, one week later, I look like a reptile, skinning off. You can imagine how beautiful I look. ;)

Sunday came, and I turned back home, alone. My compañeros had monday off from work, so stayed one day longer, lucky bastards. While waiting on the side of the road, on a bus that didn't show up, I got offered to drive along in a van with student transport on it, they drive along whole Costa Rica. I agreed, the start of a safari. The roads during the first part until the ferry are not paved, and that made this little van very clear, hopping on every bump in the road. (+ no airco = melting) :D

While sitting alone on the ferry, being absolutely high on happines, I saw the sun go down on sea. It was beautiful and made me think of all sweet family and friends, who I really want to share all of this with.

Finally arived in San Jose, I didn't know which bus to take. I got lost, stepped of to late of the bus. Got to Heredia. Went back, bus driver told me at the right spot to get off. I didn't recognize the environment in the dark. Took a cab for a ridiculous small distance. Came home at 23.00. (While left at 14.00 at the beach!!!) Haha I guess I ended the weekend in typical 'Miss zero-orientation style'.

Eerste werkdag

Stress. Maar -zoals bij First world problems uitgelegd- door het verkeer, niet voor mijn eerste werkdag. Perfect dus.

-

Stress. But -as explained in First world problems- caused by the hysterical traffic, not because of my first working day. So: perfect! Life here is mostly quiet and peaceful. I don't feel like being the exception to that and getting all pumped up about one thing or the other. So what I have agreed on with myself is the following: I can only stress about one thing at a time. At first that was definately about my suitecase, but for the ones who are interested, I got it back (woehoewww), so now I concentrate all my stress on traffic and on traffic alone ;) .

I needed to be at 9.30 at parque de los angeles. From there I walked with a lady from Projects Abroad to the Universidad Nacional (Heredia) where I will be working the next ten weeks. I got introduced to my coordinator at the internship place and to all other collegues. What lovely people! Unfortunately my Spanish is too basic to join all conversations, but just observing them makes me happy too. The first thing I did at the office was drinking coffee with all of them. All collegues act as friends, sharing the food they brought, having very animated dialogues, often resulting in loud laughter.

During my first day I mainly got to know the company. What they do, their goals, ethics, products and services. Like exploring the identity of the business. I read the news papers they produce, watched the programs they make, the websites they create. I work in the officina de la communicacion de la UNA (Universitat Nacional). Their main goal is to report the que-hacer of the university. But it goes beyond that. They also produce regional, national and even international items, mainly for other channels.

During my first weeks, I will mostly just observe and shadow, since the Spanish is still too hard. What is the planning so far? Monday I will go to the beach to film. (I definately realize how good that sounds.) And tuesday there is a big French congress, I will be joining. The lady who I accompany, doesn't speak French , so I'll be translating. By the way, here in Costa Rica they are also obliged to learn French at school, but just a basic knowledge, not like us in Belgium as second national language. I didn't know that. I sure look forward to next week.

This story will be continued.

Eerste indrukken

Back to the roots.

-

First impressions, are the nicest. Nothing is known yet, everything still to be discovered. Exciting. Everything is impressive. No judgements, just observations.

I arrived in the dark. Couldn't see mucht, until I arrived at the house of my host family. A small, cosy habitat, only consisting out of one floor. Build in a style that reminds me of one of those houses in a vacation parc. Consisting out of a lot of wood, also the walls of my room. In front of the entrance door there are some swing chairs, American style.

Each house is surrounded by a big fence, which makes it possible to leave the front door open. There was wind blowing through the whole house, I enjoyed the sound it caused in the surrounding trees and bushes. A very intense noise. A slightly warm breeze already introduced me to the nice temperature that I would experience the next day.

My room is small and cosy. A bed, closet and a table. What more does someone need? Right before I left for Costa Rica, I send a lot of my belongings towards home. Almost no juwelery, not too many clothes and no luxury products I brought. I want to try to live like the people here do, basic life. Back to the roots. Could be nice, I think. And it suits well with this nature-loving country known for its ecotourism.

Something I couldn't pass without noticing, were the many religious items spread throughout the whole house. They even have some sort of altar in their living room. And even I get to sleep in presence of the holy cross. I have already been asked about my religion and religious habits. What I answered, I'll let you guys guess, but I did decide to join them to church some day.

The next morning I discovered the bright Costa Rican sun, love at first sight. Unfortunately my sun lotion is in my lost suitcase, so it made my skin blush. In the garden they have a quite hysterical dog. It's one of those fluffy Chinese dogs. Looks really funny, but I got recommanded that if I want to keep my hands, I shouldn't touch it. Luckily it is locked away, so I can enjoy the garden as well.

The streets are very old and abandoned. I live in a small place nearby the city of Heredia. It is extremely calm here. Here and there they have some football fields where neighbourhood kids gather to play, a lot of old man chilling in front of their houses, greeting me. I really like the buses driving along the streets. They remind me of the schoolbuses in old American movies.

Heredia is called city, but doesn't strike with the concept of a western city. It looks more like a bigger village with wide streets, palm trees and a lot of stores and supermarkets. Real authentic, old shops. No H&M, Zara or other big chains so far. A lot of colourful dining places and old cars rolling around the city.

Bueno, didn't see much more so far. Will only have to start working on Wednesday, so planty of time tomorrow to discover everything. I'll keep you posted.

Dekentje erover, kussen in mijn nek, eigen tv = Brigitte happy.

Films die ik gezien heb:
Taxi driver
Finding Nemo
The injured
Grease
Toy Story

-

26th of januar 2014, finally this day arrived. My departure to Costa Rica. What a good thing I checked my flight ticket the day before. For some unknown reason I thought I was leaving at 11.15 in Barcelona. WRONG. It changed to 7.40 = getting up in the middle of the night, finding a cab and having to wait two hours in the early early morning.

The route I was about to follow, would lead me from Barcelona to London. From London to New York. And finally from New York to San Jose. Sixteen hours of travelling, pretty long one could say. But don't pity me, I felt like a royal all these hours of flying. On the plane from London to New York I was sitting at the window. It didn't last long until I discovered I was the only passenger in this row, PARTY. Blanket to cover myself, pillow in my back (three actually, my invisible neighbours didn't mind me borrowing), own television = Brigitte happy.

Movies I watched:
Taxi driver
Finding Nemo
The injured
Grease
Toy Story
(I'm sorry for the ones who consider this to be unuseful information: but I write mostly for family and close friends. I suppose these are the ones that expect details :D )

Since not everything can go smooth, life is though, I lost my suitecase in New York. Hopefully I'll recover it soon. I only have one outfit. I wear closed warm shoes, in a climate of 30 degrees and full sun. Nice. Toothpaste and such I also had to buy at arrival. But my lost suitcase only is a small concern in a lovely country with wonderful weather as Costa Rica.

I arrived about nine o'clock local time at my family, four o'clock in the morning - Belgium time. I was extremely happy and exhausted and surrended myself to the best sleep ever full of nice dreams.
